Q - What is cheek augmentation?
Cheek augmentation, also known as malar augmentation, is a plastic surgery procedure which uses an implant to add prominence to the cheekbones.

Q - What are the implants made of that are used for cheek augmentation?
There are a variety of facial implants which can be made from different materials including Gore-Tex, solid silicone and other substances.

Q - How do I know if I’m a good candidate for cheek augmentation?
If you are physically healthy, realistic in your expectations, and seeking an improvement in the appearance of your cheeks, you may be a good candidate for cheek augmentation.

Q - What will happen during a consultation for cheek augmentation?
During your consultation for cheek augmentation, the surgeon will talk to you about your goals and what you dislike about your cheeks. A thorough medical history will be taken and your face examined. All aspects of the surgery will be explained including the technique, the facility, the anesthesia, the recovery, the risks and the associated costs. Photographs may be also be taken of your face at the time of consultation.

Q - Where does the cheek augmentation procedure take place?
Cheek augmentation may take place in a surgeon’s office-based facility, an outpatient surgical center or a hospital.

Q - What type of anesthesia will I receive for my cheek augmentation procedure?
Cheek augmentation is often performed with a combination of local anesthesia and sedation, though general anesthesia is sometimes used instead.

Q - How is cheek augmentation performed?
For cheek augmentation, incisions may be made inside of the upper lip or the lower eyelid. The surgeon will gently stretch the tissue to create a space, insert the implant over the cheekbone, and close the incisions. A dressing may be applied to the cheek area.

Q - How long is the surgery for cheek augmentation?
The average surgery time for cheek augmentation is about thirty to forty-five minutes.

Q - Where are the incisions located for cheek augmentation?
The incisions for cheek augmentation may be located on the inside of the upper lip or the lower eyelid.

Q - Will I have scars after my cheek augmentation procedure?
Incisions do result in scars, though they are very-well concealed if not invisible as they are located either inside of the upper lip or the lower eyelid.

Q - How much pain can I expect after my cheek augmentation procedure?
You may experience some discomfort after your cheek augmentation procedure, but this can be relieved with prescription medication.

Q - What should I expect of the recovery after my cheek augmentation procedure?
You should expect some bruising and swelling after your cheek augmentation procedure. Dietary restrictions may be necessary for a period of the time, and moving the mouth and lips may be difficult at first. Dressings or bandages may be removed within a few days after surgery and stitches within about ten days.

Q - How much time should I plan to take off from work after my cheek augmentation procedure?
Normal activities, including work, can usually be resumed within one week

Q - How soon after my cheek augmentation procedure will I be able to exercise?
Any exercise or other activity which may jar or bump the face should be postponed for at least six weeks.

Q - When will the stitches be removed after my cheek augmentation procedure?
The stitches may be removed or dissolve on their own in about ten days.

Q - What risks are associated with cheek augmentation?
As with all types of surgery, there are some risks that are associated with cheek augmentation and these may include adverse anesthesia reactions, capsular contracture, implant shifting, infection, unnatural shape, the need for additional surgery.

Q - Will my cheek augmentation procedure be covered by insurance?
Cheek augmentation procedures which are solely cosmetic in nature are generally not covered by insurance. Patients should be sure to check with their own insurance company.

Q - Can I finance my cheek augmentation procedure?
Financing is available for many plastic surgery procedures.
