 Cheek augmentation, also known as malar augmentation, is a plastic surgery procedure which can add prominence to the cheekbones and create better facial harmony. For this surgery, an implant is inserted into the cheek area. Facial implants come in a variety of sizes and may be comprised of various materials including solid silicone, Gore-Tex, Merselene mesh or other materials.
Cheek augmentation may be performed on its own or it may be combined with other procedures such as a facelift, eyelid surgery, or a forehead lift. Candidates for cheek augmentation should be physically healthy and realistic in their expectations.
Cheek augmentation may be performed in a surgeon’s office-based facility, a hospital, or an outpatient surgery center. Anesthetic options include local anesthesia and sedation, or general anesthesia. The average surgery time is about thirty to forty-five minutes.
Surgery begins by making an incision which is typically located inside of the upper lip or inside of the lower eyelid. Once the incision is made, the surgeon will stretch the tissue to create a space for the implant. The implant is then inserted over the cheekbone and the incision is closed. Once the surgery is completed, a dressing may be applied to the cheek area.
Bruising and swelling can occur after cheek augmentation. Patients may feel some discomfort which can be controlled with medication. Moving the mouth and lips may be difficult at first and dietary restrictions may be necessary for a period of time. Dressings are typically removed within a few days, and the stitches may be removed within about ten days.
Normal activities, including work, can usually be resumed in about one week. Any activities which threaten to bump or jar the face will need to be avoided for at least six weeks. |
