Forehead Lift FAQs

Candidates for the forehead lift should be physically healthy and realistic in their expectations. Most patients are aged forty to sixty-five.

The forehead lift may be performed in a surgeon’s office-based facility, a hospital, or an outpatient surgery center. Anesthetic options include local anesthesia with sedation, or general anesthesia. The average surgery time is about one to two hours.

Surgery begins by making an incision which is commonly located at or behind the hairline. For an endoscopic forehead lift, several smaller incisions are made. Once the incision is made, the surgeon will remove excess tissue, alter the muscles, and elevate the eyebrows if necessary. The forehead skin is tightened, excess skin is trimmed, and the incisions are closed. Bandages may be applied to the forehead.

Bruising and swelling are common after the forehead lift. Most of the swelling fades within a week or so while the majority of bruising will fade within two to three weeks. Patients may experience numbness, headaches, or other discomfort which can be controlled with medication. Itching and hair loss may also occur with the traditional approach. Recovery tends to be easier and shorter with the endoscopic technique. Bandages are usually removed within one to two days after the forehead lift, and stitches within one to two weeks.

Normal activities, including work, can typically be resumed with seven to ten days. Endoscopic patients may be able to return to work sooner. Strenuous activities will need to be postponed for several weeks and sun exposure should be limited for several months.
